East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer promotes a farmer-to-farmer learning approach. Our strategy builds on the relationships between farmers on the basis that mutual trust encourages learning. By helping them develop their relationships and sharing knowledge with other farmers in the area, we increase our outreach.
We support key farmers to showcase profitable and sustainable cultivation techniques to their peers. Neighboring farmers are invited to observe the results throughout the crop cycle on their demonstration farms. This inspires the use of new skills which builds on farmers’ traditional practices. Our knowledge transfer teams provide regular support throughout the crop cycle; on all aspects of production, from land preparation to harvest.
Our local technical advisors regularly invite farmers to participate in technical field days towards the end of the cropping cycle. Here, we encourage review and discussion on the improved techniques being applied in the demonstration. Detailed farm records are used to share technical, financial and marketing information during these events. Analysis of cost and return improve farmers’ understanding of the benefits to be gained from adopting new varieties and technologies. In addition to showcasing good cultivation techniques, field days also promote market linkages between value chain actors.
Our focus at East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer is on sustainability. We assure this by regular and long-term support in the areas we work in.
