An introduction to East-West Seed in Thailand
Since 1982, East-West Seed, locally known as Sorn Daeng (“Red Arrow”), has developed a business which has revolutionized the Thai vegetable industry. With no investment into variety development of vegetables, vegetable farming was not a profitable business for farmer at that time. East-West Seed made it their mission to change all this. Through plant breeding and the introduction of better varieties, and carefully cultivated relationships with farmers, vegetable farming has now become a highly profitable and sustainable business.
In 2014, the knowledge transfer team first set up activities in Phrae province. The farmers in the area were mainly fresh chilli growers. With inadequate production knowledge they had very little success with their production. The East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer team shared advice on a range of different topics, from tending seedlings to the preparation of plots. They also offered new knowledge and remedies for common plant diseases and insect problems. Soon, the team expanded to other areas in Phrae, followed by new programs in Phitsanulok, Ayyuthaya, Angtong, and Suphanburi.
